Human Rights Watch: Crimes in Western Tigray very serious

Horn of Africa director at Human Rights Watch Laetetia Bader joins us to talk about a new report on Western Tigray by Human Rights Watch.

The report says that, despite a peace agreement between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and the Ethiopian regime, Amhara forces have continued committing ethnic cleansing in Western Tigray.

Killings in detention centres, torture and inhumane treatment, enforced disappearance and forcible expulsions are among the crimes detailed in the report.

Asked whether the crimes do not amount to genocide, she says further in-depth investigation is required to determine the exact nature of the crimes, while emphasising that the crimes are very serious.

The report calls on the Ethiopian regime and the international community to take the issue of delivering justice to Tigrayan victims seriously. She tells us that she is worried the issue of justice might be swept under the carpet for political expediency.
